Abstract
Although research on employee mobility has shown how movers transmit productive knowledge across firms, it has paid little attention to whether these movers also carry practices that expose firms to wrongdoing. We theorize compliance-relevant practice—the recurring ways workers interpret and enact formal requirements while performing tasks—as portable experience that travels through hiring that shapes a destination firm's subsequent corporate violations. Because such practice is enacted inside ordinary work and weakly corrected by immediate feedback, it tends to move quietly between firms and persist after entry. We further argue that its persistence is conditional on reception: imported practice is more likely to endure where the destination supplies less corrective pressure. Matching firm-level enforcement records from Violation Tracker to individual job histories from LinkedIn (2001–2023), we find that firms whose hires arrive from more permissive prior employers incur more subsequent violations. This relationship strengthens when the destination firm has a permissive compliance history, higher employee churn, or more concentrated hiring. These findings extend mobility and organizational learning research by underscoring compliance risk as something firms can hire in and by reconceptualizing corporate violations as partly a product of interfirm labor-market pathways rather than the penalized firm alone.

陆雪歌,现为明尼苏达大学卡尔森商学院助理教授,主要研究战略管理与组织决策,特别关注组织的跨界行为,跨界与市场活动之间的动态关系等。研究兴趣包括企业社会影响与可持续发展,以及创新体系建设。目前正在开展的研究项目包括如下:(1)企业可持续发展领域:可持续发展转型的产品市场与劳动力市场壁垒,信息公开在新兴市场国家以及不同社区的调节效应;(2)企业创新领域:第三方机构对场域内创新的督促作用,跨界竞合关系对创新的影响。
陆雪歌教授于2022年在康奈尔大学商学院获得管理与组织方向的博士学位,曾在开始博士项目前,就职于世界银行华盛顿总部(2014-2016),负责有关能源、气候、与环境发展项目的管理和统筹,并在之前分别获得约翰霍普金斯大学公共政策学硕士(2013)和复旦大学新闻学学士(2011)。

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. My research sits at the intersection of strategic management, corporate sustainability, and innovation. My current research explores why organizations span market boundaries, and how boundary-spanning shapes inter-organizational competition and collaboration. I earned my Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from Cornell University, my M.A. in Public Policy from Johnson Hopkins University, and my B.A. in Journalism from Fudan University. Before starting my academic journey, I worked as a consultant at the World Bank to promote climate finance and sustainable energy access.
